How the four pillars map your birth moment into elemental language โ and how En uses it in your daily reading.
What is BaZi?
BaZi โ literally "eight characters" โ is one of the most precise destiny-reading systems ever developed. It maps the exact cosmic moment of your birth into four pillars: year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar holds a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, producing eight characters that describe the elemental energies you were born with and the cycles of fortune moving through your life.
Unlike Western astrology, BaZi does not ask where the planets are. It asks what the universe was made of at the moment you arrived โ and what that composition means for who you are.
History & Origins
BaZi emerged in China during the Tang Dynasty (618โ907 CE), developed by scholars and court astrologers who spent lifetimes refining a system for reading destiny through time. By the Song Dynasty (960โ1279 CE), it had reached the form practiced today, codified in foundational texts like the Yuanhai Ziping โ still studied by serious practitioners.
For over a thousand years, BaZi was the private knowledge of imperial advisors. Emperors consulted it before campaigns. Families used it to understand their children. Merchants read it to time their trades. It spread from China through Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, and into every community of the Chinese diaspora across Southeast Asia โ quietly shaping major decisions across half the planet, for a thousand years.
In the West, it remains almost entirely unknown. Most English-speaking people have never heard the word BaZi. That gap is precisely why it is En's most significant differentiator.
How It Works
Your birth date and time are converted into the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. This produces four pairs of characters โ your four pillars.
| Pillar | Based on | What it governs | |--------|----------|-----------------| | Year Pillar | Birth year | Ancestry, social world, early life | | Month Pillar | Birth month | Career direction, parents, prime years | | Day Pillar | Birth day | Core self, identity, marriage | | Hour Pillar | Birth hour | Inner life, children, later years |
Each pillar contains a Heavenly Stem (one of 10, representing elemental quality) and an Earthly Branch (one of 12, the same animals as the Chinese Zodiac). The interplay between all eight characters โ and the five elements they carry (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) โ reveals the balance and tensions at the core of your nature.
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar. It is the most important single character in your chart โ the energetic identity of your core self. Everything else in the chart is read in relationship to it.
What BaZi Reads
- Your dominant element โ the energy you naturally embody and project
- Your lacking element โ what you seek, what challenges you, what draws your attention
- Your Day Master โ the specific elemental identity of your core self (e.g., Yang Wood, Yin Water)
- Your elemental balance โ whether your chart is overly strong, weak, or balanced
- Major cycles (ๅคง้ Dayun) โ 10-year periods of shifting fortune that unfold across your life
- Annual and daily energy โ how today's elemental weather interacts with your natal chart
What You Need
BaZi works best with a birth time, because the Hour Pillar completes the chart. Without it, three pillars are still deeply meaningful. Birth location is not required.
- Birth date only โ Year, Month, and Day pillars โ a solid, useful reading
- Birth date + birth time โ All four pillars โ the full BaZi chart
If you don't know your birth time, En still gives you a meaningful reading from three pillars. The Day Master and elemental balance are determined from the Day Pillar, which requires only your birth date.
How En Uses BaZi
Each day, En calculates the current Day Pillar in the Chinese calendar and reads how its elemental energy interacts with your natal chart. This becomes one of the primary signals in your daily synthesis.
When today's elemental energy supports your Day Master, En may surface themes of confidence, momentum, and clarity. When today's element conflicts with your dominant nature, it may point toward resistance, strategic patience, or inner work. When systems converge โ when BaZi, Western transits, and Nine Star Ki all point in the same direction โ your reading reflects that convergence as a clear signal.
No other consumer app does this. BaZi has existed for 1,300 years. En is the first product to bring it to a general English-speaking audience, synthesized with the rest of the world's wisdom traditions.
Common Questions
Is BaZi the same as the Chinese Zodiac?
No. The Chinese Zodiac (12 animal signs) is just one dimension of BaZi โ the Earthly Branch of your Year Pillar. BaZi reads all four pillars together, making it far more specific and personal. Two people born in the same year share the same zodiac animal but have completely different BaZi charts if they were born in different months, days, or times.
Do I need to be Chinese or Asian to use BaZi?
Not at all. BaZi is a calculation system based on the moment of your birth. It describes patterns of elemental energy that are universal โ not cultural. Anyone born anywhere can receive a reading.
Is BaZi fatalistic? Does it say my future is fixed?
Classical BaZi practitioners see the system as describing energetic tendencies and cycles, not fixed outcomes. Knowing your elemental nature and the cycles ahead is meant to give you better information for the decisions you make โ not to suggest that the future is predetermined. En takes the same view: the chart is a map, not a sentence.
How is BaZi different from Western astrology?
Western astrology tracks the positions of planets in the sky at your birth and as they move today. BaZi uses the Chinese lunisolar calendar to extract elemental information encoded in time itself โ year, month, day, hour. The two systems ask different questions and use different frameworks. Used together, they offer a richer and more layered picture than either provides alone. That synthesis is exactly what En is built for.
